Madison didn’t see Eric again until Friday. Work was just really busy. And she had a piled up list of errands to do, so she didn’t get home until really late on Thursday.

She definitely wasn’t avoiding him or anything. Definitely.

She wasn’t sure why. It wasn’t like Eric had done anything wrong. Mostly, she was nervous to be alone around him again. She didn’t trust herself or her feelings.

Midday on Friday, though, she got a text from him.

Hey, we still need to go to the arcade together, like you promised me. I have to introduce you to the electronics of the late 80s. You free tonight?

Had she promised to go to the arcade with him? She remembered them joking about it, but she hadn’t thought he was serious. She would have been lying if she said she didn’t feel a burst of anticipation at the thought.

She tapped out a reply but stopped herself just before hitting send. Wait, wasn’t she doing exactly what she’d promised not to do? Spending more time with him was a sure way into trouble. She looked at the response she had typed:

Sure, I don’t have any plans. What time?

Almost of its own accord, her thumb hit send. Surely she could be trusted at an arcade full of teenagers, right?

His immediate response read:

When do you get off work?

I’ll probably be home a little after 5:30.

Perfect, let’s plan on 6ish. We’ll grab something to eat while we’re out too.

Something to eat? Definitely more of a date than two friends hanging out. She sent him a simple thumbs up as a response.

Putting her phone down on the desk, she noticed her palms were already a little clammy just thinking about the evening. She’d been feeling successful at putting aside her feelings for the last twenty-four hours or so, but chances were, they would all bubble to the surface tonight when she was back with Eric.

She wasn’t sure if that was a good or bad thing.
